This is an English-Chinese translation report about an excerpt of The Obstacle is the Way: the Timeless Art of Turning Trials into Triumph. Ryan Holiday, the author, introduces the Stoic Philosophy by the anecdotes about the celebrities(such as Marcus Aurelius, John D. Rockefeller). Holiday uses these examples to state that people should try to control their temper and think how to turn obstacles into advantages. This book was selected as one of the best-selling books in 2014, which was loved by the readers both at home and abroad. In translating the excerpt, the translator follows the following steps: the pre-translation preparation, the case analysis and the conclusion. The translator chooses the title and some typical words and sentences to analyze with the usage of following translation skills(such as amplification) and strategies(such as reinventing sentence structure). When translating, the translator has come to some conclusions. Firstly, in the pre-translation preparation, the translator has to find the official Chinese versions of some special terms and famous sayings by referring to relevant books and the Internet. Secondly, the translator should combine theory with practice. To make the translation accurate and authentic, the translator uses the translation skills and strategies when translating. If it is not easy for the translator to understand, the translator needs to analyze the contexts and characters. In addition, the translator should pay attention to the differences between English and Chinese. Finally, if the translator wants to translate well, the repeated scrutiny can make sure that original meaning is accurately conveyed.
