Since the Obama Administration adopted the “Pivot to Asia” policy, the Sino-USrelations have gotten more and more complex. This thesis tries to better understand theObama Administration’s policy of strategic rebalancing, and its impacts on andimplications for China through analyzing the two most significant dimensions of Sino-US relations–economic and military relations. This paper argues that the US policy of strategic rebalancing is a continuation ofthe long-standing goal of the U.S. to safeguard its interests in the region, and that Chinais a centerpiece in the rebalancing policy. This policy has posed new challenges to theSino-US relations. Against such a backdrop, strengthening bilateral relationship, especially the economic and military ties between the two countries, is not only mutuallybeneficial, but also essential for the stability of the Asia-Pacific region. The body of this thesis consists of three chapters. The first chapter briefly analyzesthe historical background of the US rebalancing strategy in the Asia-Pacific region, andthen goes on to elaborate on China’s overall importance in the region as well as in theUS strategic chessboard in East Asia. The second chapter focuses on traditional and newissues that exist in the current Sino-US relations from the perspective of economy andtrade. The third chapter illustrates why, in the new context, the military relationshipbetween China and the U.S., the strategic “short slab” in their relations, deservesincreasing attention from both nations.
