A Study On The College Entrance Examination System During The Period Of The Republic Of China

The college entrance examination system is a fundamental engineering in the training and selection of talents,which is closely related with the development level of national higher education and the harmonious and sound development of society.In the current college entrance examination system of China,the national unified entrance examination is the main way of enrollment with independent enrollment in partial colleges and universities as a complement.Under the background of the gradual evolution of higher education into popular education,the college entrance examination system is also in the turning period of great change.To trace the history of the college entrance examination system,analyze its content and sort out its evolution trend are indispensable for the study on the reform of college entrance examination system and are also beneficial to the current reform of the system.This paper, with the comprehensive undergraduate college entrance examination system as the research object, traces the origin of the new-style college entrance examination system in China,generalizes its historical development during the period of the Republic of China and summarizes its evolution trend on the basis of previous studies and all sorts of information collected.By following the traditional method by stages, i.e.according to the regime change during the period of the Republic of China, the comprehensive undergraduate college entrance examination system at that time is divided into Nanjing interim government period, the period of Beiyang government(1912-1926) and the Kuomintang government period(1927-1949).And according to the different ways of enrollment, the comprehensive undergraduate college entrance examination system in the Kuomintang government period is classified into independent recruitment stage,planning recruitment stage, unified recruitment stage and diversified recruitment stage.This paper also makes a general summary of the evolution trend of the system on the basis of deep analyses of the system at each stage in terms of the background,general situation of universities,the content of examination and the characteristics of the examination system.The comprehensive undergraduate college entrance examination during the period of the Republic of China, undergoes a variety of recruitment stages including the independent recruitment stage, planning recruitment stage,unified recruitment stage and diversified recruitment stage.During the evolution,the enrollment methods were gradually diversified, the design of examination questions became gradually reasonable and attention began to be paid on the the justice of enrollment.The comprehensive undergraduate college entrance examination during the period of the Republic of China,as it were, has to some extent promoted the modern transition of China’s higher education from the traditional one.It’s the booster and lubricant of the modernization of China’s higher education.Therefore,the study of the comprehensive undergraduate college entrance examination during the period of the Republic of China as a starting point to have a look at its features,trends and limits is of great significance for the reform of the college entrance examination at the current stage featuring popular education.
