High School Students’ Parent Support On Career Education And Its Relationship With Psychological Separation And Career Decision

Every decision of a high school student will affect his or her future career. Since quality-oriented education springs up in China, more and more efforts have been put into career education. Apart from school education, family plays an important role in students’ understanding and choice of career. There are a lot of studies on career decision, but few people focus on the family factor. Therefore, the current study focused on parent support on career education. A qualitative study was conducted and Scale of Parent Support on Career Education was developed. On that basis, an relevant study was also conducted with other career decision scales. A study about the relationship between parent support on career education, psychological separation and career decision was done. The main results are as follows:1.Parent support on career education consists of two parts and five minor parts. Two parts are fundamental support and hortative support. Five minor parts are emotion support,information support, action support, interest influence and family environment.2. Scale of Parent Support on Career Education consists of dynamic factors and static factors. Static factors are demographic factors. Dynamic factors consists of behavior support, interest development, skill development, information support and parents’ interests.3. Scale of Parent Support on Career Education has good internal consistency reliability, content validity and construct validity. Internal consistency reliabilities of the five dynamic factors are between 0.635-0.847. Half reliabilities are between 0.634-0.754.Internal consistency reliability and half consistency of the whole scale are 0.884 and 0.716.4. About high school students’ career decision: Boys have less motivation than girls.Girls have significantly high scores in indecision and internal conflict. Students in higher grades have less career confusion. Thinking about career earlier also makes students less confused.5. About parent support on career education: Fathers are more active in educating children about their own occupation and working environment. Mothers are more influential on children’s career education. Parents’ education is also positively correlated with parent support on career education.6. Parent support on career education, interest development and information support are negatively correlated with career decision difficulty. Variance in career decision difficulty is significant when parents’ education is taken into consideration.7.Parent support on career education has a negative correlation with career decision.Psychological separation has a partial mediate effect on them. Both psychological separation and parent support on career education affect career decision.
