A Study On Current Situation Of Utilization Of English Local Curriculum Resource In Junior High School

Abstract/Summary:
With the development of basic education reform, English Curricular Standard in the Phase of Compulsory Education (revised edition)pointed out that English curriculum resources include English teaching materials and the other teaching materials, support systems and teaching environment which contribute significantly to the comprehensive language ability of students. The rational exploitation, actively using and effective management of various curriculum resources is an important guarantee to improve the quality of teaching. However, as a part of English curriculum resources, local curriculum resources do not get enough attention.For this reason, the thesis tries to do an empirical study on 269 students and 30 teachers in three junior high schools in Guilin, aiming to investigate the current situation of the utilization of English local curriculum resource by means of questionnaires, interviews and classroom observations. The main questions of this research are:1. What are the junior high school students and teachers’understanding and attitudes towards local curriculum resource; 2. how do the teachers use local curriculum resource in junior high school English language teaching; 3. what factors influence and restrain teachers to use local curriculum resource in junior high school English language teaching at present?From the results of survey, we can find some phenomenon as follow:1. students in junior high schools could not express the local contents appropriately even though they were interested in them; 2. English teachers had a clear understanding of the definition and status of local curriculum resource, but only a few parts of them integrate local curriculum resource into daily teaching through the ways of comparing the cultural differences, recommending local reading materials, carrying out group discussion and so on; 3. what influence and restrain teachers to use local curriculum resource in junior high school English language teaching mainly are the insufficient of teachers’local awareness and teaching ability, the lack of local teaching materials and references for teaching, the stress of limited teaching time and entrance examinations.In light of the above problem, the author puts forward some helpful suggestions for students, teachers and local educational administrative department:1. students should actively collect local knowledge in a variety of ways instead of accepting local knowledge from teachers passively, carry out group cooperative learning with partners and dare to speak English with local knowledge; 2. teachers should develop professional level by means of strengthening local awareness and knowledge and innovating teaching methods by means of integrating local curriculum resource; 3. local educational administrative department should providing training of local curriculum resource for English teachers and adding local knowledge to the English examination.
