Advanced mathematics is a required course for those students in higher vocational colleges, which also plays a significant role in promoting students to learn specialized courses and ensuring them to have a further development. Therefore, advance mathematics is very helpful to those students in higher vocational colleges. However, mathematics nowadays in higher vocational colleges is a subject that teachers hates to teach and students dislike to learn, moreover, some of the headmasters hesitate to arrange. It is learned that such problems also exist in other higher vocational colleges. Thus teaching effect of advanced mathematics makes us worried. What causes the phenomenon? How to change this situation? Combined with my teaching practice, this paper studies on the current situation of advanced mathematics in Xian Yang Vocational & Technical College in hope of finding an appropriate teaching reform for advanced mathematics in higher vocational colleges.Questionnaires and interviews was implemented among teachers of advanced mathematics and students in Xian Yang Vocational & Technical College to investigate the structure of the teaching staff, teaching methodology, satisfaction of teaching material, as well as the students’ motivation and cognition in learning advanced mathematics. Then statistic analysis was made according to students’ final scores in higher mathematics. It was found that the major factors influence the higher mathematics in Xian Yang Vocational & Technical College include five aspects. First, the current teaching material does not well match the students’ majors and can not properly serve the profession. Second, the quality of the teaching team should be further improved. Third, the teaching methods, principles and approaches need to be further improved for that they are considered in some degree dried, simple and dogmatic. Fourth, most students think that Advanced Mathematics is a subject that is hard to learn well and not of great importance so that they are not likely to put much effort in it. Fifth, the approach to evaluate this curriculum remains simple so that students’ ability to practice could not be shown in a comprehensive way. To solve the above mentioned problems, the author offers some practical proposals from the following five perspectives, including course objectives, characteristics of teaching materials, approaches, assessment, teacher troops construction and so forth. In accordance with these reformed proposals, a certain number of students in Xianyang Vocational&Technical College are selected to be tested. The result turns out that students become more interested in mathematical modeling and they do even better in their mathematical examination, which shows that the proposals perform great importance in inspiring students’ intelligence, learning interest as well as their thirst for Mathematics. This research offers constructive references for development strategies as for teaching reform in higher vocational colleges, and practical basis to reform Mathematics teaching in Xianyang Vocational&Technical College. Additionally, it provides good references of educational reform for more higher vocational colleges and to some extent scales new heights in terms of teaching level and quality of Advanced Mathematics.This research offers some constructive references for development strategies as for teaching reform in higher vocational colleges, and practical basis to reform Mathematics teaching in Xianyang Vocational&Technical College.
