As new curriculum reform deepens among primary schools, extracurricular reading’s contribution to student’s lingual cognition, lingual utilization and writing skills have been proved, which aroused attention in educational circles and even the whole society. To achieve the senior student’s extracurricular reading target which new curriculum reform requested, to assist senior students in challenges brought by our informative society, issues of senior student’s extracurricular reading in Western area deserves being solved preferentially.By using methods of questionnaire survey and interview, the survey was conducted randomly in four primary schools in S District and 336 students from grade 5 to 6, along with their teachers and families. The survey mainly covers: 1, senior students’ judgment of extracurricular reading’s value, reading materials, reading methods and reading environment; 2, Families’ attitudes towards extracurricular reading and their own reading conditions; 3,Teacher’s instruction to extracurricular reading. After analyzing SPSS17.0 statistics, reading issues existing among senior students in S District are: poor judging ability, low reading frequency, too much cartoon and comics, limited reading resources, limited reading method, bad habits and lacking of reading environment.Combining factors of student, families, school and society, this thesis elaborates interior and exterior causes regarding issues of senior students extracurricular reading.Through four perspectives: 1, nourishing student’s judging ability; 2, extending reading ranges and strengthen instructions to reading methods; 3, Start cooperation among families, school and society; 4, Create a good reading environment, strategies are given such as expanding reading sources, arranging family reading courses, making appropriate reading schemes.
