Talents Cultivation Pattern Of Sino-Foreign Joint Venture Universities

With the development of globalization, cross-border higher education has become an important national strategy to enhance internationalization. Since China’s joining WTO, the Sino-foreign joint venture universities and programs have become an important type of cross-border higher education, and made significant progress in practice and development, increasingly attracting the attention among education stakeholders, researchers, government leaders and policy-makers. However, the previous studies focus on the macro-level of how Sino-foreign cooperation in running schools can facilitate internationalization, while there are fewer studies on the micro-level, especially the talent cultivation of institutions. Due to most Sino-foreign cooperation education are joint-venture education programs, the studies focus on Sino-foreign cooperation projects rather than independent institutions. By taking X university as a typical case of Sino-foreign universities, this paper analyzes its patterns and characteristics of talents cultivation, summarizes the basic features and reality problems of Sino-Foreign Joint Venture Universities, and discusses the development trends of Sino-Foreign Joint Venture Universities.Combining with case study, questionnaires investigation and semi-structured interview, the research findings are as follows.First, talents cultivation pattern of X University demonstrates the "integrated" and "hybrid" features which fully absorb the best practice of both parent universities, and has developed distinguished features based on practice and innovation. The unique patterns include the following hallmark. First, the flat management structure, makes the operation and management more efficient; Second, the integration of Chinese reality with foreign experience, borrows excellent experience and resource from both parent universities; Third, the independent innovation on talent cultivation process carries out the practice around the idea of student-centered to meet the requirements from market and society; Fourth, integration of resources, takes the advantages of regional resources and develops in-depth interaction with the community and the city Fifth, it devotes to cultivating independent world citizens.Second, X university’s talent cultivation modes have emerged and shown its uniqueness. However, some problems still exist in reality due to internal factors and external environment, covering the internationalization atmosphere needs to be enhanced, the regional interaction needs to be enhanced, the curriculum plan should be optimized, faculty quality needs to be strengthened and tutor system should be improved.Third, this thesis explores the dynamic factors that affect the talent cultivation of Sino-foreign universities, finding that there’re crucial forces, namely "tension between internationalization and localization", "interaction between university and the city" and "the building of entrepreneurial university" are shaping the talent cultivation of Sino-foreign universities. "The contradictive tension of internationalization and localization" not only affects the formation of the pattern, but also serves as the key factor that restricts its further development; "the depth of interaction with the city" determines the abundance of resources for universities; "entrepreneurial university" represents the feasible direction to the future development of Sino-foreign universities.
