Aiming at the phenomenon of cramming education and fast rhythm that still exists in the current high school mathematics classroom, this paper researches the leaving blank in high school mathematics teaching in order to improve the efficiency of mathematics teaching and enhance students’ s independent thinking and innovation ability.This paper centres on two aspects of idea and strategy, from three dimensions of teaching types, teaching links and strategy. It mainly applies mixed methods which is qualitatively dominant. Firstly, it gets a general understanding of high school mathematics teachers’ knowledge about leaving blank through questionnaire and interviews; Then, through classroom observation and qualitative content analysis, and combining with the fragments of specific teaching cases, the study explores strategies of using leaving blank in different mathematical teaching; Finally, it gets conclusions from the results and analysis of the comprehensive questionnaire survey and teacher-student interviews and classroom observation.The conclusions of this study are as follows:(1) On the idea and theoretical level, many high school mathematics teachers’ understanding of leaving blank is not comprehensive. In addition, there are some problems of using leaving blank in the practical teaching.(2) On the strategy level, much attention needs to be paid to the application of leaving blank at two aspects of introducing and generating concepts and theorem laws, as well as consolidating and applying them. It is to be noted that timing and strategies are appropriate or not while leaving blank. More leaving blank can be used when teaching thinking demanding, complex concepts and theorem laws or that little related with previous knowledge; More attention should be paid to difficulty points, error prone points and problems set in variable types when using leaving blank in the exercise teaching.
