This paper aimed to analysis the research about current teaching status of high school poetry from the standpoint of explaining the imagery in the poetry. Literature research and teaching material analysis were used as the major method. The relationship between the connotation,characteristics of the imagery and the artistic conception were used as theoretical framework. The psychological principle and capabilities were used as psychological framework. The poetry involved in the high-school compulsory textbook(JiangSu province version) were generalized and analyzed systematically. This paper indicated that mainly problem existed in poetry teaching were included as follows:the lack of teacher’s literature attainment, the lack of effective imagery interpretation method, the lack of student’s imagery accumulation, the lack of proper appreciation method of poetry,the lack of correct role positioning of the teachers and students, the lack of interaction teaching model.The best way for poetry teaching should start from the imagery from the point of the characteristics,relationship of imagery and connotation and the psychology principle and ability. On this basis, the author proposed the practice strategy of applying imagery into the poetry teaching process. Firstly, teachers should guide student to appreciate the artistic conception by referring to the common poetic rendering mode, to grasp the reasonable process to appreciate the poetic sentiment, to select the scientific reading structure mode to promote the imagery teaching. Secondly, students should accumulate more imagery, feel the blank art from real to virtual, taste the overall mood. Finally,teacher should convert the role from the traditional teacher to appreciator, student should convert the role from the outsider to insider, teachers and students should convert the role from the duplicator to creators.
