The teaching of notional words in classical Chinese is the priority among priorities during the instruction of classical Chinese. At present, the teaching of notional words in high school classical Chinese mostly faces problems like monotonous teaching content, improper teaching method etc. Based on this, the paper tries introducing the origin interpreting analytical method into the teaching of notional words in classical Chinese.Based on the font of ancient Chinese characters, the origin interpreting analytical method applies the traditional six categories of Chinese characters(self-explanatory characters, pictographs, pictophonetic characters, associative compounds, mutually explanatory characters and phonetic loan characters) to explore the original meanings of Chinese characters when they were coined at the very beginning and prove them with some ancient literature. According to this paper, this method helps to improve students’ interest in learning classical Chinese, contributes to exploring the cultural implication of Chinese characters, enables students to appreciate the miraculous charm of Chinese characters, conduces to solving puzzling problems like different meanings in ancient and modern times during the teaching of classical Chinese, contributes to constructing a semantic system of notional words in classical Chinese and helps students to efficiently master the meanings of polysemous words.The paper is divided into 4 chapters. The first chapter discusses the importance and current situation of the teaching of notional words in high school classical Chinese. In the second chapter, the paper introduces the basis, content and application requirement of the origin interpreting analytical method. The third chapter explores the application value of the origin interpreting analytical method in four aspects. The fourth chapter presents specific application examples of the origin interpreting analytical method in notional words commonly used in classical Chinese.
