With the rapid development of modern science and technology,scientific and technological exchanges have become increasingly frequent.At present,Chinese experts and scholars are on the growing demand for scientific and technological information,and they need to read relevant professional articles to obtain information in their research fields.At present,85%of articles about science and technology are published in English.For some scholars and students,it is not easy to completely understand these articles.Therefore,the translation of EST(English for Science and Technology)articles has become increasingly important.This report is based on an English-Chinese translation of an EST academic paper in the field of mechanical engineering,and this translation project is completed by the author.The source text contains 14,134 English words and this translation task is required to be completed within 15 days.This report first focuses on the pre-translation analysis and preparations.In the process of pre-translation analysis,the author analyzes the linguistic characteristics of the source text from lexical,syntactic and discourse levels.In terms of lexical level,terminology,acronym and polysemy terms are frequently used in the source text.In terms of syntactic level,the source text uses a large number of passive voice,nominalization as well as complex and long sentences.In terms of discourse level,the source text focuses on the coherence,clarity and fluency of the text,and expresses scientific facts through rigorous logic and objective description.In the process of pre-translation preparation,the author elaborates on the preparation process,including conversion of text format,preparation of terminology,preparation of parallel texts,selection of searching engines and translation tools.Secondly,this report adopts the Skopos theory as the theoretical guidance of this translation task and applies the Skopos rule,coherence rule and fidelity rule to the translation practice.This report chooses some typical cases and analyzes in detail the translation of terminology and acronym under the guidance of the Skopos rule,the translation of nominalization,passive voice and long sentences under the guidance of coherence rule as well as the translation of polysemy terms,figures and tables under the guidance of fidelity rule.In addition,the report also points out some problems and shortcomings in the translation process and puts forward some solutions to these problems.Through the translation of the academic paper in the field of mechanical engineering,the author gains a great deal of enlightenment.First of all,the three rules of Skopos theory can provide a theoretical guidance for the translation of EST texts.The translator can adopt different translation strategies and skills under the guidance of the three rules to improve the quality of translation.Second,a good grasp of the linguistic characteristics of the source text,collection of parallel text and full use of searching engines can make up for the translator's deficiency of professional knowledge.It is expected this report can be of some assistance and provide some references for translators to translate similar kind of texts.
