A Report On Machine Translation And Post-editing Of TAUS Translation Data Landscape Report

The rapid development of globalization and IT technology in recent years has presented the translation industry with unprecedented opportunities and challenges.Translation technologies,especially Computer Aided Translation(CAT)tools and machine translation(MT),have experienced continuous progress,which have created a brand new translation mode-Machine Translation and Post-editing(MTPE).Although there are more and more CAT and MT applications now,the mode combining them both is far from being used widely.Many people even doubt its performance.A main reason is that translators lack understanding about the application scope and detailed process of MTPE.Consequently,even when MTPE is perfectly applicable to a translation task in their hand,they would fail to choose the best translation scheme as they should do.To solve these problems,this report takes Translation Data Landscape Report released by the Translation Automation User Society(TAUS)as an example to show translators how to use MTPE mode,introducing preparatory work before translation,instructions for the integrated translation environment and features of the CAT tool MateCat,such as quality assurance and project analysis.By case analysis,this report summarizes the general performance of this MTPE practice and the scenarios where most the MTPE mode is suitable.It also describes the typical correct and incorrect translation results,presenting some methods to the post-editing work of MT results.It is found that the MTPE mode brings about a vast improvement to the translation efficiency in this sample translation task.If the expected translation quality is no better than “good enough”,or if MT systems and post-editors have been trained before,the MTPE mode could achieve better results.To the incorrect MT results in terms of accuracy,language and style,post-editors could improve the quality by polishing details,restructuring and customizing the output text for purposes in post-editing works.This report aims to improve people's understanding of machine translation and post-editing and explore the importance of MTPE for the revolution of the translation industry.It also points out the imperative of MTPE for successfully handling the massive amounts of translation in the era of information explosion.
