This paper is the report on the translation practice of Yacht Design of 18th International Ship and Off shore Structures Congress (ISSC 2012). It analyses the features of source text, and explores translation strategies and methods based on functional equivalence theory put forward by Eugene A.Nida.This paper can be divided into five parts in total. The first part is an introduction to the background of the source text and the purpose of translation. The second part mainly elaborates functional equivalence theory and points out its instruction significance to this paper. The third part is an analysis of the source text, focusing on the translation difficulties of vocabulary, logic and syntax. The fourth part is devoted to analyzing translation examples in detail based on the Nida's theory of functional equivalence and the textual features which have been pointed out in chapter three. The fifth part summarizes the experience and lessons drawn from this translation practice. This paper concludes that during the translation practice of scientific texts, under the framework of functional equivalence theory we need to adopt such translation methods:take the literal translation as the dominant method, supplemented by free translation. Before translating this article,we should develop a deep understanding of the source text by consulting large numbers of parallel texts and carefully analyzing the logical differences between Chinese and English. Only by this way can we get an accurate and qualified translation.
