This report is a case study of the E-C translation of a science fiction Memoirs of an Aranean Hrpist written by Chuah Guat Eng,who is a Malaysian Chinese writer.This novel is different from usual materials related to environmental protection which are boring and sermonic;it is much more interesting and thought-provoking in that it shows vividly the serious consequences of ignoring environmental protection.Therefore,it is of significance to translate it into Chinese.It is a science fiction,aiming at appealing to everyone to pay close attention to environmental degradation.Skopos theory emphasizes that translation is a purposeful action and the translation strategies are determined by translation purpose,so the author of this report chooses Skopos theory to guide her translation practice.This report gives a detailed explanation to the three rules of Skopos theory and their requirements on the translated text and analyzes the translation methods with some examples.In the translation practice of Memoirs of an Aranean Harpist,the author of this report mainly adopts amplification,free translation,literal translation,omission and other translation methods under the guidance of Skopos rule,coherence rule and fidelity rule,which make the translated text more authentic,concise and popular,fulfilling the purpose of conveying to the target readers the significance of environmental protection.
