Scientific And Technical English Translation Strategies On Structural Objects Under The Guidance Of Adaptation Theory

It is necessary to apply translation theories to practice.As a portion of linguistics,language adaptation theory provides a theoretical framework for translation activities and it is playing an increasingly significant role in the field of translation.However,adaptation theory is mostly utilized in literature translation rather than EST.Therefore,under the guidance of adaptation theory,in this report,some chapters in US Navy Diving Manual are utilized as examples and EST translation strategies in language structure are explored from lexical,syntactical,and discourse perspectives.From lexical perspective,firstly,different from EST terms,non-professional terms have flexible meanings.Therefore,translators are obliged to conform to different contexts to achieve the dissolution of ambiguity.Secondly,if words' dictionary meanings are copied mechanically,readers will be perplexed by the meaning.Therefore,words' meanings need to be modified to comply with original text's context.Thirdly,in order to adapt to Chinese means of expression,some English words can be translated into Chinese vivid and expressive four-character phrases.From syntactical perspective,firstly,passive voice is always used in EST to embody objectivity,while it enjoys less frequency in Chinese.Thus,translators have to comply with context and Chinese means of expression and transform passive voice into active voice appropriately.Secondly,translators can choose precedent attributives or post ones in accordance with context.Thirdly,when translating long EST sentences,translators can comprehend logic and simplify long sentences in order to conform to context and suit Chinese means of expression.From discourse perspective,firstly,repetition and addition are utilized as to lexical cohesion to adapt to Chinese means of expression.Secondly,the dominance of logic can reconcile original text with Chinese language habits and embody original text's logic.In summary,on the basis of others' research,this report combines adaptation theory with EST translation closely and provides new perspectives for EST translation research.
