In the year of 2014, The People's Republic of China has put forward the core literacy as the target and direction of a new round of curriculum reform. The development of society and progress of geography also makes new requests of junior geography education. How to handle the prospective geography classroom and implement the training of basic geography core literacy has become the problem that every geography researcher and practitioner should envisage. Under the background, it' s necessary to inspect the value of introducing all kinds of geography tools to the geography class. As the product of the development of geographic science in the information era, GIS has very special superiorities - storing large geographic data,analyzing complicated geographical processes and appearing visual geographic graphics.Based on the teaching practice in GIS teaching class and the control class, and the theories of pragmatism, cognitivism and constructivism, this paper takes observation and questionnaire survey to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of two teaching models at three aspects of training students' synectic thinking, area cognition and the capacity of geographic practice. The research discusses the feasibility and availability of GIS to develop students' geography core literacy. The main research contents include:(1)The traditional Geographic class has some disadvantages to train students'Geographic core literacy while using GIS to assist teaching has the unique value——advanced equipment, abundant resources and real-time interaction.(2)This paper takes "China's agriculture" as an example and designs the teaching processes based on GIS to establish the complete application of GIS assisted teaching,and apply it to the teaching practice.(3)This paper formulates the observation scales. According to students'participation in class, responses to questions and the questionnaire after class, the paper evaluates deeply the effect of GIS to train the geographic core literacy at the aspects of synectic thinking, area cognition and the capacity of geographic practice. Finally, the research gets the conclusion that GIS has a better effect in the regional Geography teaching.
