Service learning is a new educational concept and teaching method that is emerging in America.It is also an integrated curriculum of experiential community service and school knowledge learning.At present,service learning has been carried out in universities,and even in primary and secondary schools in America,which has been developing rapidly in Europe,Asia Pacific and other regions.Until now,service learning has obtained good teaching effect and extensive social recognition.Therefore,the further research on the theory and practice of service learning in China can provide a new idea and useful reference for the promotion of our country's basic education practice.This article mainly through the overview of American service learning,focuses on the practice process of service learning in American primary and secondary schools,with two practical topics for the specific cases.Thus,we can realize educational value of service learning in American schools,and then summarize the enlightenment to practice educational work in China's basic education,especially for reference and consideration of integrative practical activity curriculum in Chinese primary and secondary schools.This paper mainly uses the literature method,case analysis method and comparative method to elaborate the service learning and its practical education function in American primary and secondary schools.It is divided into the following five chapters.The first chapter is the introduction,which mainly explains the reasons and the significance of the research,and combs the domestic and foreign research situations of American service learning according to the existing literature.Then it clarifies the research scope and the research methods,through the definition of core concepts.The second chapter mainly discusses the interpretation of American service learning from its development process,ideological basis and characteristics,then summarizes the evolution process of service learning in the chronology with the historical background and major events.The third chapter introduces the practice process and the practice form of service learning in American schools,and its practice evaluation from the perspective of teachers,students and communities.Especially through the analysis of service learning planning examples in primary and secondary schools,this paper emphasizes the implementation process of service learning,and describes the implementation steps in two practical subject cases.The fourth chapter discusses the educational function of service learning in American primary and secondary schools on Teachers' teaching and students' learning.The fifth chapter is the key part of this paper.Compared with Chinese practical education problems in basic education,and in reference to the development of service learning in American schools,we can draw lessons and meaningful experience enlightenment in Chinese basic education reform and the integrative practical activity curriculum.
