An Empirical Study Of Intergenerational Transmission Of Poverty In China

The intergenerational transmission of poverty is one of the important causes of poverty.In order to understand the situation of the intergenerational transmission of poverty in China,this paper collected the data from China Health and Nutrition Survey from 1988 to 2010,the China Family Panel Studies data for 2014.Firstly,we calculate the level of intergenerational transmission of poverty and the intergenerational mobility of poverty respectively from 1988 to 2014 based on the transfer matrix of poverty intergeneration and Cohen's Kappa coefficient.Secondly,we discussed how gender and census register affect the level of intergenerational transmission of poverty and the intergenerational mobility of poverty respectively.Finally,we used Logistic regression model to analyze the influencing factors of the intergenerational transmission of poverty in China.The results show that the level of intergenerational transmission of poverty in China declines year by year and the transmission level of absolute poverty in 2014 is 9.4% and the transmission level of relative poverty in 2014 is 23.3%.The intergenerational mobility of poverty in China increases year by year and now it's at a moderate level.The intergenerational mobility of poverty of female is higher than the male,while the intergenerational mobility of poverty in urban area is higher than that in rural area.Parents anchor in poverty will increase the probability of their children to sink into poverty when they grow up.Improving the education of poor families is an effective way to stop the intergenerational transmission of poverty.
