Study On Owners' BIM Capability Maturity Evaluation In China

With increasing awareness and adoption of BIM in domestic construction industry,to enhance the application of BIM technology will be the main task of next stage's construction industry information building.Owners,as the leading factor of construction projects and the core of project workflow,will play an irreplaceable role in this process and certainly be the biggest beneficiary.However,many owners are faced with the dilemma that neither do they know where to begin nor how to implement it.Therefore,it is an urgent problem to correctly measure and evaluate owners' BIM capability.The BIM maturity model provides the research basis for this problem.However,research efforts targeted at owners' BIM capacity assessment are relatively lacking,and consideration of the Chinese context is rare.Based on the research literatures on maturity model theory,the research developed an index system of owner's BIM capability maturity evaluation applicable to the Chinese situation using experience survey,questionnaire investigation and factor analysis.The index system comprised three levels,with 1indicatior in level one,5 indicators in level two and 16 indicators in level three,in which the secondary indicators are sorted by importance as follows: owners' capability of BIM deliverable assessment,planning,personnel,process and technical facilities.The results show that the appropriate assessment of BIM capability maturity needs to consider multiple aspects,and the focus of such assessment is shifting from technical factors to non-technical organizational readiness.Among them,quality control of BIM deliverables and clear positioning and planning of BIM implementation are the most important ones in evaluating and improving the BIM capacity maturity.The index system proposed can help the owners in domestic AEC industry properly understand and evaluate their BIM competencies and take targeted measures for BIM implementation,continuously improving their BIM capability maturity and more effectively implementing the owner-dominant BIM application mode.
