Against the backdrop of increasingly rapid globalization, theeconomic cooperation across the globe is on the rise. The conclusion of contracts is an indispensable part between the parties, the legal translation, accordingly, playing a big role in facilitating international commercial activities and transactions.Contracts which,by their very nature, are legal documents, among other things, are laden withthe complexity of sentence structures, which poses an exacting challenge for translators. This paper is an examination of long sentences commonly found in legal texts, particular examples selected from Trademark and Copyright License Agreement(attached in the Appendix). The author finds that the difficulty incurred by seemingly indecipherable long sentences consists in the use of jargon and complication of the syntax. The approaches to tackling the long sentences,in this paper, are based on the selected cases which are to be studied and compared vis-a-vis parallel excerpts of other texts. The translation of the chosen text,in the process,is composed of four steps: locating the subject-predicate structure of the sentences;figuring out the logical relationship of the minor sentences;tentatively rendering the sentences into the target language, correctly, meaningfully and logically;polishing the sentences to produce a best version. The author hopes that this paper can provide any solutions for the translation of lengthy sentence of legal English by analyzing the characteristic and syntactic structure of the cases.
