A Report On The Translation Of Eaarth

With the effects of global climate change,people paid more attentions to environment and began to explore the relationship between mankind and nature.Bill McKibben published his ecological work Eaarth:Making a Life on a Tough New Planet in 2010.This book mainly described the damage people have done and how to deal with the degradation of ecological environment.He proposed specific measures on these urgent problems,which give us some inspirations in the rapidly developed human society.This practice report is based on the 20000-word translation of the third chapter of Eaarth:Making a Life on a Tough New Planet.The language used within the text is very plain and colloquial,with few long and difficult sentences but some American historical allusions.Although Eaarth belongs to eco-prose work,it is well-arranged with clear logic and less sentimental flavor.According to Katharina Reiss's text typology principle,this article belongs to content-focused text and accurate information delivery should be concentrated during translation process.Under the guidance of text typology,free translation is adopted to deal with some historical allusions and culture-loaded words,whereas division,amplification,conversion and other skills are employed to translate long and difficult sentences.In this way,the translation becomes more understandable for the target readers.Through this translation practice,the author tries to present the original flavor of the source text and open up a new horizon for Chinese ecological literature.Besides,through the discussion of the translation skills of words,sentences and historical allusions,this translation practice provides a practical paradigm for ecological literature translation.
