Explicitation In Chinese-English Consecutive Interpreting

With China?s economic development and further opening up,Chinese-English consecutive interpreting plays a more and more important role in the international exchange and cooperation.Due to the enormous differences between Chinese and English languages,to some extent,explicitation widely exists in the process of interpreting.Explicitation is an important phenomenon in translation and interpreting,which has drawn more and more attention from scholars at home and abroad in recent years.However,a great number of studies on explicitation are based on written translation and few of them are focused on interpreting,especially Chinese-English consecutive interpreting.Through analyzing the explicitation phenomenon in Chinese-English consecutive interpreting,the thesis aims to explore the classification of explicitation and corresponding strategies so as to improve the quality of interpreting and ensure listeners? understanding.The purpose of this study is to explore the explicitation phenomenon in Chinese-English consecutive interpreting.Based on Professor Klaudy?s definition and classification of explicitation that is classified into obligatory explicitation,optional explicitation,pragmatic explicitation and translation-inherent explicitation,the thesis analyzes the explicitation phenomenon in the transcript of Premier Li?s press conference in 2017.Through the case study,the interpreter can adopt such strategies as adding subjects,verbs,objects and connectives,amplification,substitution,adding background information,free translation,literal translation and reorganization.The application of the above interpreting strategies can make the speaker and the audiences communicate more smoothly.This study adopts text analysis method.Firstly,the author analyzes the explicitation theory and read the relevant literature to determine the research problem.Secondly,the author collects the transcript of the speaker and the interpreter and makes a comparison between the source text and the target text.The research idea of this thesis is to summarize explicitation strategies based on the relevant theories and research achievements through the literature reading and analysis.In this thesis,the case study transcript of the press conference belongs to the diplomatic interpreting,which has its own specific characteristics and whose language needs high accuracy and rigour.However,the explicitation types and strategies in this case can shed light on other interpreting practice.In particular,there are certain universal rules for us to explore and develop.It is hoped that the case study of explicitation phenomenon can provide some reference and guidance for other interpreting practice and it can draw more attention to the research and offer some practical suggestions to interpreters.
