Long Chinese Sentences Management In C-E Consecutive Interpreting

Chinese and English are two structurally different languages.This requires interpreters to pay attention to such differences in their practices so as to produce interpretation delivering the meaning of the source texts and in line with the characteristics of the target language.When confronted with long Chinese sentences,interpreters will face extra pressure to deliver well-organized target texts which covey the meaning of the source texts.In the author's C-E consecutive interpreting(CI)practices,the major problem is the poor management of long Chinese sentences under the influence of the structural differences between Chinese and English which is further divided into four categories: structural disorder,unnecessary repetition,semantic deviation and semantic incoherence.In light of the great differences between Chinese and English,it is of high significance for the interpreter to flexibly transform Chinese long sentences into English.Hence,the author adopts in this report Interpretive Theory which lays stress on breaking the structural shackle of the source texts and the transfer of meaning as the theoretical basis for long Chinese sentences management.After an intensive study on the literature of Interpretive Theory and long Chinese sentences interpreting,the author seeks out on-site and post-task solutions to the above-mentioned problems of which the on-site solutions entail sentence segmentation and content integration and post-task solutions encompass logic processing and omission and addition,hoping to provide some suggestions for future practice.
