Kernel Sentence Analysis In English-Chinese Translation Of Long Sentences

The source text is selected from the first five chapters of the Germany volume of Architectural Theory by Bernd Evers,director of the Berlin Art Museum.The main purpose of this book is to introduce architectural theories from the Renaissance to the present.As an academic work on architecture,this book not only has a large volume of professional vocabularies,but also consists of complicated sentences,in particular,various long sentences made up by attributive clauses,subject clauses,parenthesis and other modifiers.Therefore the quality of the translation of long sentences in the project directly affects the accuracy and readability of the information of the whole original text.Thus,the importance of long sentence translation in this project can be seen.Motivated by the problem encountered in the translation,the author is going to make the English to Chinese translation of long sentences in the text as the research subject.To make the research more targeted,the author first analyzes two characteristics of the long sentences in the text.Then,the author reviews existing researches on English to Chinese translation of long sentences as well as the theory of kernel sentence analysis proposed by Eugene A.Nida,finding that the theory may be effective in the E-C translation of the long sentences in text.Finally,combined with specific cases,the author finds that lexically,the relationship between words can be reclassified by seven semantic categories.Specifically,the nouns and participles with dynamic meanings can be translated into verbs.Syntactically,first outline words with dynamic meaning in the underlying structures of long sentences,then list kernel sentences and find out the logic between them and manifest the implicit components when necessary.Thus the clarity of the translation logic and the accuracy of the information can be ensured.
