With the development of globalization gaining robust momentum, cultural exchange has become increasingly unique and significant in contemporary society.Chinese Open Classes have played an important role in cultural exchange with its diverse content, abundant background knowledge and large numbers of audience, and it is of great benefit to foreigners in understanding the unique society, economy, history and culture of China.Consequently, the interpreting of Chinese open classes has far-reaching influence and deserves further research. This report is based on the consecutive interpreting of the open class entitled“Tao Yuanming's Poetic Life” by Mr.Mo Lifeng, under the guidance of the Interpretive Theory. The Interpretive Theory, the world's first systematic theory for interpreting, plays a guiding role in interpreting. The interpreting procedure established by the theory is to express the content and emotion in another language based on the comprehension of the original text without restriction from the language form. The selected open class involves a multitude of Chinese idioms and unique systems, official positions, and classical Chinese at ancient times.Furthermore,it is richly embellished with quotations, which captivates audience's attention. To transfer the source language in a faithful, authentic and refined way to the target language for audience is a major challenge in this task. From the perspective of the Interpretive Theory, this report selects the typical cases encountered by the author and summarizes four major difficulties in the interpreting process, namely, idioms and China's specific terms in history and culture, classical Chinese, information redundancy as well as logical incoherence.Meanwhile, four strategies are proposed, namely, literal translation, free translation, amplification and omission. In the process of interpreting and case analysis, the author examines the principles and strategies of consecutive interpreting for open classes,in order to help interpreters avoid the effect of external form of language and mechanical word-for-word interpreting, and express the meaning of the source language more flexibly and accurately.
