This report concerns itself with the Chinese translation of English monography from the perspective of Functional Equivalence Theory. It probes into the existing problems of E-C translation related to foreign academic literature, and adopts some effective translation methods to improve the quality of translation. The present translation report is based on the first two chapters of the monograph titled Sociology and Human Rights: A Bill of Rights for the Twenty-First Century(“the Source Text”).The Source Text is typical of contemporary academic writing in the following ways: highly academic terminology associated with studies of human rights and sociology;frequent employment of long sentences that are complex in structure;a succinct yet formal style. In order to properly preserve these linguistic features and reproduce the underlying information in the Source Text, the author of the translation report selected the functional equivalence theory as the guiding theory for the present translation report.Under the guidance of the functional equivalence theory, the author of the translation report sought to solve the problems encountered in translation and deepen his understanding of the functional equivalence theory. In completing the translation project, the author of the translation report mainly adopted literal translation, literal translation with annotation and liberal translation in terminology translation, and adopted such tactics as linear translation, division, reversion and restructuring in the translation of long and complex sentences. In doing so,the author of the translation report hopes that the resulting target text can provide Chinese readers with solid and scholarly information on contemporary sociological study of human rights in the United States. On the other hand, the author of the translation report also hopes that this translation report can provide domestic translators with some inspiration and reference in translating English academic literature related to human rights and sociology.
