With the progress of globalization, information transmission and technical exchanges among enterprises become increasingly frequent. The E-C translation of business research reports,as an inevitable means for Chinese enterprises to learn the trends of global markets,is of growing importance. The practice report is based on the author's translation of IBM research reports during internship. From the perspective of Text typology,it analyzes the major translation difficulties the author encountered in translation procedures, which mainly includes:(1)Proper Noun Translation: failure to convey intended meaning and no equivalents in target language;(2)Long Sentence Translation: improper collocations, improper word order, misuse of voice, and nominalization;(3)Slogan and Subtitle Translation: asymmetry in language form and lack of conciseness.According to Newmark's Text Typology, the majority parts of research reports belong to informative text, while the others belong to vocative text, which is used to attract readers to invest in their products or to purchase their technologies and solutions. For these types of texts,Newmark points out that the communicative translation approach should be applied.Nevertheless, since the informative text is mainly to exchange information and there are also economic terms and proper nouns involved, the semantic translation approach which attaches more importance to the accuracy of source text is also a necessity.Based on this idea, the author applies both approaches to solve the translation problems,including:(1)Diction and Zero Translation(2)Addition,Division and Conversion;(3)Recreative Translation: Chinese antithesis structures and Chinese fourcharacter structures. The findings of this practice report are expected to provide enlightenment to subsequent translation of IBM research report and research report of other enterprises.
