Dealing with differences in word order of the target and the source languages is part of an interpreter’s task. However, word order in long and complicated sentences can present some difficulty for an interpreter and may lead to misinterpretation.Based on the scientific studies of Russian and foreign scholars, the thesis introduces the basic functions of word order, its main types and its significance in the process of interpreting,as well as peculiarities of Russian and Chinese word order. The present thesis is based on the case study of the mock conference,in the course of which the author interpreted a part of the press conference of the second session of the 13th National People’s Congress. The speaker made ample use of long sentences with complicated word order, which created difficulties for the author. The thesis analyses various manifestations of word order interference, such as information and logic deficient interpretation,as well as poor fluency and improper pauses. On the basis of the case study,it also proposes different strategies of overcoming this impact:strengthening knowledge of the syntactic systems of the target and the source languages, improving analytical abilities in the process of listening, and getting a better hold of common transformations used for the interpretation of sentences with complicated word order.
