With the booming Chinese economy, people's pursuit for quality of life is growing, and the tourism industry in China is developing rapidly, too. There are different kinds of travel brochures on the market among which travelogues, sharing what the writer sees, hears and feels from a unique perspective, are drawing more attention and enjoying greater popularity. The translated text selected for this translation practice is part of the book titled A Movable Feast:Life-Changing Food Adventures Around the World which was published by Lonely Planet in 2010.This book is a collection of travelogues covering not only local foods but also the customs, the peoples and the natural environment. In this book, there are some cultural-rooted words, figures of speech, long complex sentences, short but informative sentences, etc.,therefore it demands a rigorous attitude and professional skills of the translatorThe translation of selected articles is under the guidance of the theory of Text Typology proposed by Peter Newmark.Based on the previous studies,Newmark further enriched Text Typology. He believes that texts can be divided into different types according to the different functions of language itself. He suggests that there be preferred translation methods to deal with different types of texts.Newmark proposed semantic translation and communicative translation.Communicative translation attaches importance to rendering the contextual meaning in an acceptable and comprehensible way, while the semantic translation attempts to render,as closely as the semantic and syntactic structures of the target language allow, the exact contextual meaning of the original.Taking into consideration the characteristics of the text type of selected articles, the author tries to choose semantic or communicative translation to deal with different situations. This report analyzes the application of semantic and communicative translation in the Chinese translation of A Movable Feast:Life-Changing Food Adventures Around the World under the guidance of the theory of Text Typology proposed by Newmark. It analyzes the target language text at four levels, namely, lexical level, syntactic level, rhetorical level and cultural level.By flexible application of semantic and communicative translation, the author and translator hopes to provide a readable translation for Chinese readers as well as a relatively reliable reference for other translators.
