In recent years, machine translation has gained significant progress from the benefits of technological development. With the popular use of machine translation technology, the spotlight has turned to post-editing in the translation industry.MT(machine translation)+CAT(computer-aided translation)+PE(post-editing)model is widely used to develop strengths of quality control and efficiency in English-Chinese translations. This English-Chinese translation report adopts this model to achieve an efficient and high-quality translation.MemoQ is employed to process the source text in this translation practice. The source text is derived from A Short History of the Mongols published in 2018,written by George Lane who is a lecturer in the University of London. The source text contains Introduction,Chapter One and Chapter Two,which depict the history of the tribes of the steppe and unveil the lifetime trajectory of Chinggis Khan from dispossession to imperium. With a total of 19,743 words of the source text, the translation amounts to 26,347 words. As a historical monograph, the source text includes numerous Mongolian terminologies, names, places, tribes, and historical facts, leading to a meticulous and rigorous linguistic feature.Hence,it gives rise to obstacles to dissect the source text. There are various difficulties respectively encountered at the lexical level, syntactic level, and textual level in this project.Specifically, they are(1)ambiguous semantics, the mistranslation of the part of speech and specific terms;(2)improper word order and the mistranslation of complex sentences;(3)the lack of cohesion and repetition.Based on the above difficulties, this report employs MT+CAT+PE model, and directs solutions at these difficulties with corresponding post-editing methods under the post-editing guidelines of Translation Automation User Society(TAUS).To be more specific, these methods are(1)replacement,intratextual gloss, transpositionand supplementation;(2)reversing,amplification,and sentence restructuring;(3)reiteration and ellipsis. In virtue of the employment of the model to translate this Mongolian historical monograph, this report proposes that the translations of historical monographs are bound to lay stress on post-editing,as machine translation can not be fully relied on.Additionally, the report summarizes the advantages, major achievements and limitations of MT+CAT+PE model, which is committed to providing some reference for post-editing of the Mongolian historical monographs.
