Chinese characters are very important in teaching Chinese as a second language.Due to its characteristics,Chinese characters are a major difficulty for most Chinese language learners.Characters are especially difficult to remember for learners whose native language is based on alphabetic writing.At present,although there are plenty of research papers about characters,teaching Chinese as a second language,there are not enough of works analyzing the mistakes in characters written by Ukrainian students and methods of teaching characters.Moreover,there is also a lack of literature written on this subject.Therefore,the author of this research conducted a survey on the Chinese character learning situation of 128 Ukrainians with different levels of Chinese,collected relevant data,and analyzed the types and reasons of mistakes in characters written by Ukrainian learners.Thanks to analysis of the mistakes types in Chinese characters,the author found out that Ukrainian students had more mistakes in writing strokes,radicals or in structure than in writing a wrong character.Among the mistakes,the stroke mistakes are the most present,then it is radical mistakes and mistakes in structure.Among the wrong character mistakes,the most common are mistakes in similar in writing characters,then similar in pronunciation characters and homophones.The main reasons of Ukrainian students' mistakes in Chinese characters are mother tongue negative transfer,generalization of the rules of the target language,not appropriate teaching materials or way of teaching.Therefore,the author of this paper also recommended some teaching suggestions,in order to improve Chinese character teaching methods and boost teaching efficiency.The paper is divided into the following five chapters:The first chapter is the introduction of the research topic,its targets and value.Furthermore,it introduces some other researches on this subject and methods that were used while carrying out this research.The second chapter focuses on types of mistakes in writing characters produced by Ukrainian students,it also includes the prognosis of mistakes and collection of data.In addition,it summarizes the similarities and differences of mistakes in Chinese characters done by Ukrainian students and students from Philippines,Russia,and Korea.The third chapter examines the reasons of the mistakes in characters written by Ukrainian students.The analyzed reasons include: mother tongue negative transfer,generalization of the rules of the target language,not appropriate teaching materials or way of teaching.The forth chapter introduces the relevant teaching strategies.The fifth chapter is the conclusion,which summarizes the conducted research,its deficiency and hopes for the future work.
