The cultivation of generalist teachers is vital for education in rural China, which helps solve such problems as inadequate rural primary school teachers, lack of professional quality and etc.The key to solve them is to improve the quality of undergraduates majoring in primary education.Taking Anqing normal university and Tongcheng teachers college as examples, this paper combines the methods of literature research, interview and questionnaire,to study the state of Anhui students majoring in generalist education. The quality of enrolled students is found worrying. In this program the average score of students admitted at the undergraduate level is far lower than that of other majors, while students admitted at the college level with a background of junior high school also have lower scores than those in model high schools. There are several reasons behind this.First, the welfare of teachers is inferior to that in other industries, and the living states of teachers are embarrassed.Second, the major of generalist primary education is designed mainly for rural schools.Young people tend to flow into cities and few college graduates would voluntarily stay in the countryside for teaching. The third is the improperness of current value orientation. To this end,we propose some countermeasures: strengthening promotion of education profession, improving teachers' welfare to attract high-quality students, improving conditions to make rural schools more attractive, making strict enrollment to ensure the quality and educating students to keep the sense of mission of engaging in rural education.
