In recent years,with the rapid development of internet,different from the traditional model,new media has been gradually and widely applied,for example,“microblog,wechat,blog and podcast”.The public may show great concern for the society and express opinions & emotions via the internet.In a free and open internet environment,all viewpoints are intertwined and collided.The social hot problems are very easy to arouse wide concern among the public,so as to form “online public opinion”.How the local government properly handles “online public opinion” is a significant manifestation of governing capacity,and it is also a key to maintain social stability.For the local government’s response to online public opinion for emergencies,the academic circle’s analysis and elaboration have been gradually increased,and a batch of academic achievements has been made.This paper is based on academic research results,takes online public opinion for “W city opposes waste incineration plants” event as a case,expounds the connotation of new media and online public opinion,analyzes the propagation characteristic & process on online public opinion in the era of new media,and finally puts forward the local government’s effective measures on handling online public opinion for emergencies.The emergence of online public opinion is often closely related to specific public events.Whether the response to online public opinion is timely and effective directly affects if the public events can be smoothly resolved.In the era of new media,the local government must improve the capacity to handle online public opinion.
