Abstract/Summary:
Gambian rural women provide over 60%--80% of all the labor in agriculture and are responsible for food production and family nutrition. Extension Change Agents however, are not only failing to these give rural women proper recognition as full partners in their own rights, but often don't understand the matrix of agricultural decision making in their every day life as forming a part of the context of project innovations.; This thesis investigates such issues that contributed to the failure of the Jahali-Pachar Small Holder Rice Irrigation Scheme in which women's decision-making role were ignored. Further, we tried to find out if the scheme has prepared rural women to be functionally integrated with the direction of higher physical production it is designed to achieve by transforming them into independent and self sustaining individuals rather than being dependent and directed.
