An Analysis Of Interpreting Skills And Strategies Of The Press Conferences Of NPC And CPPCC Under The Guidance Of The Concept Of Faithfullness In The Interpretive Theory

With increasing international exchanges,the demand for interpretation grows,too.The requirements for interpreters are higher and higher Interpretation is not just transmitting a language mechanically.Interpreters should not only express source language,but should also express the meaning of source text in target language.The founder of the Interpretive Theory,Seleskovitch pointed out that the object of interpretation should be the meaning of information,rather than words.The Interpretive Theory,as one of the most commonly used theories in the circle of interpretation,plays a crucial role in the study of interpreting skills and strategies.An important content of the Interpretive Theory is the "principle of faithfulness".We should be faithful to the content and meanings of source language.The "principle of faithfulness" is an important criterion to measure whether the interpretation is eligible or not.The purpose of this paper is to emphasize the importance of the "principle of faithfulness" under the guidance of the Interpretive Theory.The 2003-2013 NPC&CPPCC press conferences are selected as research materials.Through comprehensive analyses and summaries,the strategies that interpreters should take when doing live interpretations are proposed.It is hoped that new contributions can be made to the research on interpretation.This paper is divided into six chapters.Chapter One is introduction,which expounds the research topic,methodology,significance and thesis structure.Chapter Two makes a comprehensive interpretation into the Interpretive Theory in an objective way,including the predecessors’ studies and theoretical basis.The background of theory and its present development are analyzed,too.The "Triangle Model" of the Interpretive Theory is stated which includes comprehension,deverbalization and the re-expression.Chapter Three details the "principle of faithfulness" and classifies it into three parts,namely,to be faithful to speaker,be faithful to target language and be faithful to audience.Chapter Four takes ancient poems,idioms,slang,etc.for example,to make a multiple analysis into the interpreting skills at 2003-2013 NPC&CPPCC press conferences.Chapter Five puts forward six strategies that should be taken in conference interpretation,to serve as a reference for interpreters.Chapter Six concludes the above text.
