A Study Of Principles And Strategies On Press Conferences Interpreting Of NPC&CPPCC Guided By The Interpretive Theory

As one form of conference interpreting (CI), the press conference interpreting (PCI) of the National People’s Congress (NPC) and the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) sessions is characterized with obvious features of CI. In addition, due to the particularity of the location, speaker and audience, it also has some diplomatic and political features. In recent years, along with the improvement of China’s international image, the significance of PCI is highlighted; consequently, an increasing number of experts and scholars are paying close attention to it.The Interpretive Theory set up in the1960s has been the most integrated systematic theory on interpreting so far. Danica Seleskovitch and Marianne Lederer, professors in ESIT, are the two founders of it. In this theory, interpreting is considered as a kind of communicative behavior aimed to deliver the sense. And the core of it is that interpreting means "to explain the meaning"—it’s a dynamic procedure of understanding the sense and re-expressing it rather than a way to exchange some linguistic symbols. The Interpretive Theory origins from the interpreting practice and it claims that the interpreter should make the sense of the true meaning of source language as well as the communicative purpose that the speaker wants to achieve. Therefore, the Interpretive Theory will have an enlightening influence on this study. PCI being the material, this thesis is going to provide some desirable principles and strategies with the data collected from the press conferences delivered by Premier Zhu Rongji during the NPC and CPPCC sessions from1998to2002. Guided by the Interpretive Theory, the thesis aims to give some references for such kind of interpreting practice in the future.This thesis is mainly divided into seven chapters. The first chapter focuses on the background and significance of the study as well as the guiding theory and basic exemplifications. The second chapter is the literature review. The third chapter introduces the Interpretive Theory in details. The forth chapter displays the main characters of PCI of NPC and CPPCC and the factors affecting it. In chapter five and chapter six, some favorable principles and strategies guided by the Interpretive Theory will be put forward. The last chapter comes to the conclusion:1) adopting the Interpretive Theory to be the guiding theory has great significance for this study;2) for the quality of PCI of NPC and CPPCC ensured,"faithfulness""equivalence" can work as the basic interpreting principles while "sentence pattern transformation""logic-processing""integrating the main points" and "information illustration" can serve as four advisable strategies.
