A Report On Simulated C-E Consecutive Interpreting Of Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s Press Conference At The 2019 NPC

This report is about a simulated consecutive interpreting of Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s Press Conference at the 2019 National People’s Congress.On March 8th,2019,a press conference was held on the Second Session of the 13th National People’s Congress,at which the State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi took questions from media at home and abroad on China’s foreign policy and external relations.As China is approaching the center of the world stage nowadays and press conferences as such cover various topics,this event was chosen as the simulated interpreting task.The report falls into five chapters.The first chapter is an overall introduction,covering the background,source and significance of the task.The second chapter is the task description,detailing the content features,language style,duration,value and expectations of the task.The interpreting process is described in the third chapter including the analysis of parallel texts "the bilingual text of the Press Conference of Foreign Minister Wang Yi at the 2018 National People’s Congress" and"Wang Yi’s Interview of the People’s Daily on December 23rd,2019",all of which are chosen to formulate the glossary and improve the quality of interpretation,in light of the Skopos Theory and interpreting methods and techniques.The fourth chapter is case analysis,citing about nineteen examples to analyze in detail how to interpret the culture-loaded words,four-character words,political terminologies,slogans and some Chinese sentences in light of the Skopos Theory,esp.of its skopos rule,coherence rule and fidelity rule.The fifth chapter is a conclusion of this simulated interpreting task,including the unresolved problems in the interpreting process,and the limitations of the interpreter’s abilities and the direction of efforts going forward recognized through the task.Through this simulated consecutive interpreting task,the interpreter has improved her interpreting skills in short-term memory,note-taking,identification of main ideas of source language and cross-cultural communication.However,there are still some shortcomings in the accumulation of diplomatic terminologies and linguistic accuracy.The interpreter needs to continue learning,accumulate and practice a lot to improve the quality of this type of interpreting and the ability of bilingual conversion in the future.
