Girls Burn Brighter (excerpt) Translation Practice Report

This report is based on the C-E translation of Girls Burn Brighter(Excerpts).Girls Burn Brighter tells the story of two Indian girls growing up on the edge of adulthood.Girls Burn Brighter as a cross-language and cross-cultural novel,which involves a large number of Indian natural and human aspects,including religion,history,material culture and other fields.For target language readers who do not understand Indian culture,if not translated properly,it will cause them a great reading barrier.Based on the language features of the source text and considering the translation purpose of cross-cultural communication and faithfully to represent the source text,the translator adopts Skopos Theory to guide this translation practice and to produce a readable and acceptable target text.In the source text,there appears many Indian unique lifestyles,cultural traditions,festivals and religious rituals.To translate these words,the translator adopts amplification,transliteration,annotation,paraphrasing and other methods to translate the culture-related words.As to the sentences with rhetorical devices,the translator adopts free translation,omission,substitution and amplification to translate.There are four parts in the translation report.The first part is a brief introduction of the task background,the objectives,purpose and significance of the task.The second part described the translation process,including translation preparation,the language features of the source text and theoretical foundation.The third part is case analysis,under the guidance of the three rules of Skopos Theory,appropriate translation methods and strategies are adopted to the translation practice.The fourth chapter gives a conclusion about the major findings and limitations of the task.
