With the full use of the unified textbook in primary and secondary schools,teachers have to choose the appropriate instructional design to accommodate its creative "two-line element" unit structure.Unit design is a way to help teachers improve their teaching style and help students better understand knowledge and cultivate holistic thinking as a whole.Therefore,a great deal of attention has been paid to unit teaching by teachers at primary and middle schools.However,during the process of practice,teachers' understanding of unit teaching design is still at an early stage and understanding the deep-level relationship within and between units requires further progress.As a new pedagogical idea,related-texts reading emphasizes multi-text reading and exploratory reading.It possesses structured and comprehensive characteristics and they play a vital role in topic selection and text combination.Therefore,this research takes related-texts reading as the guiding ideology for conducting a new exploration on the design of unit teaching,finding a new theoretical basis and practical breakthrough points for teachers relating to the design of unit teaching.Literature analysis,text-based analysis and case analysis method are all employed in the research in order to develop a strategy and help with theoretical interpretation.Theoretical discussion.Firstly,theories on related-texts reading and unit teaching are organised.After organising the connotation,characteristics and theoretical basis of related-texts reading,the author summarised the function of related-texts reading as a type of reading teaching idea that is reliant on teaching content,teaching design,learning subject and learning process.At the same time,the author briefly investigated the connotation,characteristics,theoretical basis,and value of the design of unit teaching.Five aspects of unit teaching design were then proposed: unit theme,teaching aim,teaching content,teaching activities and teaching evaluation.Secondly,based on the understanding of theories relevant to related-texts reading and unit teaching design,this paper also discusses the similarities and differences between them and examines in detail the influence and necessity of related-texts reading on unit teaching design.Therefore,this research believes that related-texts reading plays a crucial role in unit teaching design regarding developing students' advanced thinking skills,clarifying teaching goals and organising teaching texts.Case analysis.In order to understand teachers' understanding and practice of unit teaching design,this paper examines three cases of unit-teaching design and summarises the main problems from each case,including the shortage of teaching goal orientation and the simplex combination of teaching content.It also provides the direction for this paper's targeted strategy for unit teaching design.Construction strategy.Based on related-texts reading and the practical problems of unit teaching design,teachers should take responsibility for following the principle of construction,being creative and student-oriented.The strategies are as follows:(1)Topic setting strategy.Teachers should understand the principles of topic setting and clarify the types and sources of topics.(2)Text organisation strategy.Teachers should develop their text interpretation abilities and learn about text selection and organization.(3)Collective construction strategy.Teachers should take responsibility for creating a learning community,tasks in unique situations,guidance questions and appropriate classroom structure.(4)Teaching evaluation strategy.Teachers should obey the evaluation principles,which include the accordance of teaching,learning and evaluating;the diversity of objects;clearly structured evaluation criteria and the core quality of a subject.Case design.Based on the three principles and four strategies,this research attempts to design unit teaching instructions for one unit from the fourth grade unit four of the Chinese primary school textbook,including text analysis,topic,teaching goals,collective construction and teaching evaluation.This will provide a useful reference guide to primary school teachers.
