At present,computer-aided translation,in spite of its popularity, cannot completely replace human translation. It is very important to conduct post-translation editing on the basis of computer-aided translation. This translation practice report selects some chapters of Final Voyage: The World’s Worst Maritime Disasters — a book with a maritime theme — as translation materials, and studies the post-translation editing process. This practice report analyzes the selected text at word level and sentence level and explores the errors in Tmxmall platform’s computer-aided translation and proposes corresponding post-translation editing strategies. The results indicate that word-level problems are often caused by the mismatch between terminology banks and translation engines.Terminology translation can be divided into standardized terminology translation and unstandardized terminology translation. In the case of polysemy, the semantic dynamic views should be adopted. The translation version should be determined through strategies like choosing the senses according to the texts and raising awareness of marginal meanings.Conjunctions occur frequently in texts and should be translated in light of semantic or connective relation. For literal translation that is difficult to understand, word meaning extension can be applied.Common extension approaches include logical extension, pragmatic extension, rhetorical extension and cultural extension. At sentence level, the biggest problem of computer-aided translation is inconsistence with the style and logic of the target language.Due to the differences in cultural background between Chinese and English, voice and word order should be adjusted, and post-translation editing should be conducted according to the context and characteristics of the Chinese texts.English passive sentences can be translated into Chinese active sentence. In case of word order problems, the strategy to handle is to determine the subject and highlight the focus of information according to the characteristics of Chinese temporal sentence order. The report draws on different translation strategies previously summarized to conduct post-translation editing on maritime documentary texts so as to make the translation more smooth and readable, and at the same time provide references for future translation work in related fields. |
