With the high-quality development of the economy, the gender imbalance of the population and the aggravation of the aging have been the focus of our attention.Since the implementation of the strategy for the development of the western region, the population in the western region has improved markedly in terms of quantity and quality, and economic construction has also made remarkable achievements. However, the problem of unbalanced population and economic development is also becoming more and more serious. Therefore, the Coordination of population and economic development is the focus of work in the western region.Based on the interaction mechanism between population structure and economic development, this paper first analyzes the evolution characteristics of population structure and economic development in time and space, secondly, the paper analyzes the relationship between population structure and economic development by using the grey relational analysis. Finally,it further analyzes the influence of population structure on economic development by constructing the fixed effect model. The main contents and results of this paper are as follows:The evolution of population structure and economic development in the west of China. In time dimension, the ratio of old people’s support, the ratio of college and above culture, the urbanization rate and the total economic volume are increasing, the industrial structure is changing from “231” to “321”,and in space dimension, the distribution pattern of male population,old-age dependency ratio and economic aggregate shows a trend of “low in the West and high in the east”,while the economic density shows a trend of “low in the north and high in the south”,the proportion of the employed population in the tertiary sector of the economy gradually changed from “low in the south and high in the north” to “high in the periphery and low in the center”.Based on the spatial and temporal characteristics of population structure and economic development in western China, this paper further discusses the relationship between population structure and economic development by means of grey relational grade model. The results show that the relationship between population structure and economic development is high, and the relationship between population gender structure, urban and rural structure, age structure, industrial structure, cultural structure and economic development is increasing gradually, both are moderately and highly correlated;both are moderately and highly correlated, with the distribution of economic resources, the structure of economic status quo,and the level of Base decreasing. An analysis of the influence of population structure on economic development in western China.Based on the panel data from 2008 to 2018 in western China, this paper uses fixed effect model to measure the influence of population structure on economic development. The results show that the increase of sex ratio, total dependency ratio and elderly dependency ratio in the natural population structure will seriously affect the economic development of the western region. The increase in the share of primary sector of the economy workers and the share of secondary sector of the economy workers has a significant dampening effect on economic development. The increase of the proportion of urban population in the structure of urban and rural population has a significant role in promoting economic development, and has a high contribution rate to economic development. The proportion of junior college and above in the population cultural structure and the increase in the number of college students per 10,000 people have a significant role in promoting economic development.
