This thesis attempts to view the theory and practice of translation from the cultural perspective. It tries to remind people of the serious conditions of many Third World cultures, including the Chinese culture, in the context of global blending of cultures. The inequality of political powers and economic developments between Western and Third World will inevitably be shown in the exchange of cultures. The strong cultures will undoubtedly have an advantage over the weak cultures. As a kind of cultural exchange, translation is greatly affected by the cultural imbalance. The purpose of this thesis is to try to discern the influence of the cultural inequality on literary translation represented in the direction of global translation flux (Chapter Two), the selection of translation strategy (Chapter Three), the response of different readers (Chapter Four), and the development of translation theory (Chapter Five). We must take into consideration the problem how to enlarge our culture influence in the world by literary translation.
