Coherence And Translation

To translate means to induce a target text from a source text. Translation and text are closely related with each other. By exploiting the inherent property of the text---coherence, the thesis aims at illustrating the importance to reestablish coherence at different levels in the target text to satisfy readers?requirement of cognitive coherence. Then "The readers of a translated text could be able to understand and appreciate it in essentially the same manner as the original readers did? The term oherence is defined in many ways. Most scholars regard it as the underlying semantic meaning between sentences. Some believe coherence exists at lower levels. In the thesis, I propose that coherence involve the whole text. Syntagamatically, it exists between morphexnes, words, clauses, and sentences. Paradigmatically, it concerns syntax, semantics, pragmatics and style. It is of great importance to shift coherence successfully in translation. How to construct coherence is another point I put emphasis on. I attempt to show that coherence reestablishment should be made from the viewpoint of context, which is divided into co-text, situational context and cultural context. The aim of translation is achieved if coherence in the source text is grasped through the analysis of original context and coherence is established in the target text.
