Translation Of Idioms In Lu Xun's Fiction

Almost all the languages with long history are abundant in idioms. Idioms, concise and vivid, which are the refined outcome of the long-term use, are the essence of language. As idioms are the indispensable and expressive element in language, people ought to take the translation of idioms as a very important issue for the translation of idioms will directly influence the quality of the whole text.Scholars abroad and in China have made large amount of research on idioms, especially on issues as the definitions, sources and features of idioms, both English and Chinese. In terms of translation, as China has long taken in and introduced the well-known works of foreign authors, people paid more attention to the Chinese translation of the English idioms. However, as China opened to the outside world and developed rapidly, more and more Chinese works have been translated into foreign languages as English, and have become increasingly popular among the foreign readers. Therefore, the issue of English translation of Chinese idioms also caught the eyes of people. But compared with the English-Chinese translation, there are still lots of deficiencies in the translation of idioms in Chinese fictions. It is clear that the Chinese fictions and Chinese idioms are rich in cultural information; the special style of the author of the fiction may also affect the flexibility of the idioms. Therefore, the translators should pay special attention to these issues in the translation process.This paper mainly focuses on the English translation of Chinese idioms in Chinese fictions----in Lu Xun's fiction. Through the comprehensive study of idioms, the author further summarizes the features of Chinese idioms and idioms in Lu Xun's fiction, according to which she puts forward two strategies in Chinese-English translation of idioms, combining the Nida's"Functional Equivalence"theory. Finally the author lists some translation procedures with the analysis of the examples from Lu Xun's fiction.
