The comparison of texts in different languages inevitably involves a theory of equivalence. Equivalence can be said to be the central issue in translation although its definition, relevance, and applicability within the field of translation theory have caused heated controversy. And many different theories of the concept of equivalence have been elaborated within this field in the past fifty years. If we look at translation equivalence in terms of reader's response, rather than in terms of a discrete dichotomy of form and content, the final goal of translation should be equivalent to that of original literary communication. So far, many functions and purposes of language and literary communication have been proposed.In an effort to explore translation equivalence in terms of the reader's response, this paper intends to obtain a plausible account of theories and application regarding translation equivalence and other related fields. In this paper, I assume that the reader's response is the best answer embracing perspectives of recent developments in translation study in a wide communicative and cognitive frame of reference. This thesis will be divided into several parts for further exploration. First it will present some of today's most important theories on translation equivalence. During the recent years, different schools of theorists have cast their view on the definition, the concept and the classification of equivalence in translation. A brief yet all-around introduction is essential if we want to go deep into the discussion of translation in terms of the reader's response. Because of the theme of this thesis, particular focus will be given to the views regarding the reader's response in the respective elaboration of the theorists. Then the writer will move on to her own observation on the main subject of the thesis. The discussion will be further divided into parts as follows: Purposes of literary communication and language; Translation as a way of literary communication; The relationship between ST and TT as reflected in the reader's response, which comprise two points for elaboration-The inadequacy of attention paid to the reader's response in recent translation studies, and the relationship between the text and the reader; Dynamic equivalence, with its pro and cons; A more comprehensive model of translation equivalence.The next part includes practices of translation equivalence, followed with two related field for discussion: Significance of text analysis and the role of culture.With the above-mentioned mindset, I hope this thesis gives objective and original viewpoints and reflections on those subjects.
