Knowledge-based work, which is innovative as well as unpredictable, has become the main working model in knowledge economy society. For enterprises, their core competence lies in their capacity in knowledge management and whether they can survive and thrive in this highly competitive business world is very much determined by its absorption, creation and utilization of knowledge. Therefore as the owner of knowledge capital in enterprises, knowledge workers constitute the key element in enterprise management. As Peter F.Drucker has pointed out, knowledge worker productivity will become both the center issue in human resource management and the biggest challenge in enterprise management in 21st century. However, an increasing number of them, especially those in hi-tech industry are faced with serious challenges in terms of knowledge staff motivation. As a result, it is a top priority for managers in today's world to know their needs and wants and find a way to motivate them effectively. Against such background, this paper chooses technology innovators, a typical kind of knowledge staff generally recognized by management circle as its research target. Starting from hi-tech enterprises where many technology innovators gather, the authors intends to conduct a study on such factors as their needs and wants which have a bearing on their group behavior in an effort to find out the motivation mechanism which may apply to Chinese hi-tech enterprises. By doing so the author expects to provide some significant information with regard to knowledge worker motivation in Chinese enterprises. In the beginning the author makes a study on the status quo of knowledge staff motivation in hi-tech industry and also explains the significance of such a study on the development of hi-tech enterprises. Then the author briefs us on the basic concepts, characteristics and theories about knowledge workers and goes on to give her own definition of human nature when the " subjective reasonable person"hypothesis is presented. Furthermore, a careful analysis and comparison on needs and wants factors between knowledge workers and non-knowledge workers in hi-tech enterprises are conducted in many ways such as abundant literature review, one-to-one in-depth interview and survey etc. Based on this research, the author finally provides some principles enterprise should abide by when establishing motivation system as well as concrete methods on the motivation of knowledge staff in hi-tech industry.
