With the background of the country's giving full play to the development of higher vocational education, private higher vocational education has also been rapidly developed. But along with this rapid growth, a variety of management issues are also increasingly apparent, of which the delayed development of teaching staff has become a bottleneck to restrict the improvement of the quality and sustainable development of private vocational education. Currently although the research of teacher develpoment in private higher vocational education is being conducted in the country, it is not deeply enough and systematic, especially in the field of teacher performance evaluation. It is still at an initial stage. There are many issues to be addressed in the aspect of teacher performance evaluation. The majority of private vocational colleges have not yet formed a mechanism for teacher performance evaluation with the characteristics of private higher vocational education. As a result, teacher performance can not be evaluated comprehensively, accurately and objectively, which causes a series of problems to the development of teachers, decision-making and the running of the colleges in the private higher vocational education sector. Therefore, it is highly necessary to explore and to propose solutions to the problems related to the teacher performance evaluation in the private higher vocational education sector.In the light of performance evaluation and other related theories, this paper deals, in depth, with the current characteristics of the teacher performance evaluation, the existing problems and their causes in the private vocational colleges by using questionnaire survey, interview, and chi-square test, cross-tables and other social statistical methods with Zhaoqing Science and Technology Polytechnic as a case study on the basis of the research and analysis of the school mission, training model, teacher characteristics and with reference to the experiences accumulated in the teacher performance evaluation.According to the results, the main features of the current teacher performance evaluation are:teacher performance evaluation is at the initial stage; the comprenhensiveness and objectivity of the performance evaluation index system have constantly been enhanced, which is better in line with characteristics of higher vocational education; and the composition of assessing staff tends to be reasonable. However, the training of personnel is to be strengthened; performance evaluation results are only closedly related to teachers' application for higher professional title. Main problems related to performance evaluation of teachers include teachers are not much satisfied with the performance evaluation system; the design of performance evaluation is not quite rational with weak performance monitoring in the implementation process; and the assessed teachers'training was ignored; feedback for the assessment of performance results is not properly given to the teachers and application of the performance evaluation results needs to be strengthened.Based on the above findings, the paper, combined with the theories and methods of teacher performance evaluation, offers nine countermeasures to improve the teacher performance evaluation in private vocational colleges,which are to enhance awareness of the purpose of performance evaluation, to adopt the standardized performance evaluation procedures; to enhance the participation of teachers to develop performance plans, to design a scientific and rational performance evaluation index system, to strengthen the performance monitoring of the implementation process, to lay emphasis on the training of assessed teachers with selection of the scientific and rational performance assessment methods, to emphasize on communication and feedback of performance, to enhance the application of performance assessment results and so on.
