During the current teaching process in high schools, there’s a trend to neglect theextracurricular reading instruction, which contributes to the fact that students pay littleattention to extending reading after class. As a result, the problems arising have seriouslyaffected the quality education. After investigation the author found the reasons are varied, among which are the blundering ethos of society, utilitarian examination-orientededucation, heavy burden of homework as well as the lack of teachers’ guidance on reading. In addition, students who do read after class also have problems such as poor readinghabits and thus causing inefficiency. In this paper, the author tries to explore the solutions to such problems in the teachingof high school extracurricular reading by means of theoretical analysis, social investigation, combined with personal teaching practice. The author attempts to cultivate students’ reading habits and inspire them to fall inlove with reading by stimulating their reading motivation, arousing their reading interest aswell as developing their enthusiasm towards reading. At the meantime, the authorenumerates some personal extracurricular reading guidance, such as: opening readingclasses, repeatedly emphasizing the importance of taking notes after reading and carryingout a variety of reading activities. However, as problems are encountered in specificpractice, the author hopes to make further improvement with the instructor’s guide.
