As a special information carrier, soft news has the function of effective communication and good publicity. Its nature of news decides its main role of conveying information, and its "soft" features of emphasizing entertainment and readability can arouse readers’interest and appeal to their emotions. Therefore, when translating soft news, we should attach great importance to its nature and features. Scopostheorie is an important part of functionalist translation theory. It proposes that the translator should base his or her translation on the original information and, keeping in mind the expected communication purposes together with the receptors’social background, their intellectual level and their communication requirements, adopt flexible translation skills to produce translations meeting with the needs of the receptors. Skopostheorie can effectively guide the translation of soft news. Based on this theory, this thesis explores some effective strategies for the translation of soft news, using the soft news in The Guardian as translation materials. The thesis first gives a brief introduction to Skopostheorie, defines soft news and discusses the guiding significance of Skopostheorie in the translation of soft news. Then it focuses on the features of the soft news in The Guardian after a brief exposition of the basic characteristics of soft news. Finally, the thesis analyzes some techniques of translating soft news, using the three rules of Skopostheorie as the theoretical guidance and the author’s own translation practice of The Guardian as examples. The author hopes that the analysis will be helpful in the realization of the communicative purpose of soft news.
